Maine (Coon) touring

Thurs (Oct 2nd) was a travel day.  We headed out from Canaan/Skowegan and headed west to see some more of the Maine countryside.  The colours continue to be gorgeous.  We drove mostly west and a little south, and ended up near Naples, Maine – close to the New Hampshire state line.

Along the way, we encountered a decision point amongst seemingly 3 continents!!! With such a choice of places to vist, what were we to do?  Well, of course we chose Mexico (town) and it was the first time we were ever in Mexico without having a marguerita... sad...!!!

Naples is another woodsy area; the cats had a GREAT day. We had them out for 90 minutes in Canaan in the morning, stopped near Bethel/Sunday River & trucked around with them at the rest stop for over an hour. We had a hard time getting them back into the truck!  The river and surrounding bushes was a big draw!! And then again, when we got set up near Naples that evening, they toured the woods around our spot until it was too dark to see them – another 90 minute exploration.  They were some tuckered when they went to bed...

Maine is somewhat known for their Maine Coons – which of course is what Tawny is.  I found a pamphlet here that expounded their virtues and took pride in the fact that Maine Coons are not just popular in Maine, but across the country (and in Canada too!!).    They claim that the name comes from a Sea Captain named Coon who brought long-haired cats to North America in the 1700’s – rather than the urban myth that a cat bred with a racoon (which is likely a genetic impossibility) or that a cat bred with a bobcat (I kind of like that theory; it would explain a lot of ear fuzz in Tawny and Tabudera too).  Anyway, Tawny has been strutting around Maine, and I think she is happy to be in her ancestral grounds...
