Sam & Tawny and the Blustery Day

We're in Levis, which is in the Quebec City area and, when we arrived Sunday afternoon (Sept 28th), the weather was sunny and 28 deg C (83 deg F) and we enjoyed the late afternoon warmth outside until the sun set.  Overnight, the wind kicked up and the scattered showers started.  We awoke to 10 deg C (50 deg F) and 60 km/hr gusting winds on Monday (28th).  The cats thought they wanted outside, but when we opened the door to show them, a big gust of wind and water blew thru the screen, and the cats scrambled to opposite ends of the trailer. They spent the day in bed, catching up on their beauty sleep.
John and I took the truck and headed across the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Quebec City side of the waterway, and it is a tangle of freeways and construction.  There seems to be a lot of freeways and bridges for an area of this population, but the "Bitch" (our G.P.S.) for the most part, got us where we needed to be, although she found us a Loblaws that has been closed down since last April.  At least it was not a regional distribution centre, like she found for us in Oahu...
We had some trouble finding somewhere to buy wine.  The Costco and grocery stores all have virtually the same limited labels of wine, and the labelling is quite cryptic as to where the wine is from and what the varietals are.  We finally found a provincially-regulated liquor store - SAQ - and the selection was admirable, especially all the French reds!  We haven't seen so many Languedoc and Minervois wines since our trip to that region in 2006!!  We bought a couple of bottles to enjoy over the next couple of days, despite that the prices are horrible at the SAQ.  Most wines are 70% to 100% more than they would be in Alberta and several times more expensive than we can find in the States.  John reasoned that it was no wonder the beer selections are so large in all the grocery stores!
We got back to the trailer mid afternoon and I made chicken soup from the remnants of a roasted chicken we had in the freezer.  I fogged up all the windows and it was wonderful - both smell and taste.  The cats remained low key, and we gave them some exercise with their laser and wand toys so they didn't keep us up all night.
I uploaded several pictures for this blog, but the internet is very patchy here at the campground.  (Apparently one of the campers changed spots with his satellite antenna still up and took out all the wires for this area.)  So after 1-1/2 hrs of uploads, the whole blog crashed and I lost all signals – so here I am reposting today - without pictures this time.  Hope it loads.  I'll post pics of this area later, as well as the beautiful stop we made in Ontario on the way here - right on the St. Lawrence Seaway at Long Sault Parkway, which is a series of small islands strung together by the paved parkway. We dry camped on one called McDonnell Island, and there were only maybe 4 other parties camped on the island with us that night.  It was lovely and serene.  The sunset over the water, looking towards New York was gorgeous.

We are going to go into Old Quebec City today (Tues 30th) and do some sightseeing within the walled city.  It is the only walled city north of Mexico (in North America) and we are excited to see it.  The weather is better - still cool but only breezy vs full-on windy.  The cats will have another easy day to catch up on sleep and hopefully play nice with each other.

Fall in Southern Ontario

We're back in Canada!!  We left Chicago on Monday morning, Sept 22nd and spent a few days driving through Indiana and Michigan.  It is interesting that we have now gone through five states that have abundances of corn crops.  It is being grown to make ethanol to put in the gasoline, so there is a big demand.

We stayed one night in Augusta, MI at Fort Custer State Park, and the kitties enjoyed the woods there very much - we do have issues with Sam wanting to disappear into woods wherever we go... he is back on the long leash!!

The colours are really starting to get beautiful.  The Fall Colours Tour is in full swing, although we find the odd bush and flowers with lovely summer colours too.

A beautiful cardinal who was warily watching Tawny

We crossed back in Canada on Tuesday (Sept 23rd) and found a great campground in Ingersoll, Ontario that did NOT have woods.  It was grassy with a creek running through it, so we could keep track of Sam for a change!  We arrived the next day at our friends' house, Dave & Bonnie Sask, on Crow Lake in southern Ontario. It's near Tichborne, north east of Toronto.  They have a lovely cottage on the lake, with lots of water sport equipment (for the people) and surrounding woods (for the kitties!).  Sam is in his seventh heaven here...

The foliage is really beautiful here.  There are hard wood trees, like maple, whose leaves turn gorgeous dark reds and vivid oranges.  Awesome scenery... Thursday (Sept 25th) Dave & Bonnie took us for a lovely hike through the woods, and an equally lovely ride in their motor boat to experience the fall colours around Crow Lake (and also Bob's Lake which is connected to Crow Lake by a narrow passageway).

Dave and his small snake friend...

The stillness of Crow Lake makes for gorgeous pictures

After our boat excursion, Bonnie showed us how to Paddleboard.  John was a natural!  Dave & John took a brief trip down the lake, and John kept up to Dave pretty good.  Paddleboarding is a really great core workout... so we found out...
Now doesn't John just exude confidence?!

Bonnie, showing us how it's done.

Friday (Sept 26th) John and I left the kitties in the trailer and took a drive into Kingston, which is about an hour south of Crow Lake.  We took a fun Trolley Tour around the downtown area, and had lunch at Chez Piggy's, which was started by the lead singer of Lovin' Spoonful way back in the 70's.  We had a fantastic meal, and lovely wine too.

The town is full of beautiful brick and limestone buildings, a lot of which are historical sites. There are 3 universities in town (including Queen's) and so about 25% of the city's population are students. The Kingston penitentiary has been decommissioned as of last year but the military base is still here.

The kitties are really enjoying the grounds around the cottage.  They are getting much braver around the dock too!  Sam particularly likes to hang out with John and watch the fish swim by, and the boats on the lake.  We haven't tried them on the paddleboard yet... maybe next visit...

There are chipmunks, squirrels and birds aplenty in the woods, along with frogs, toads and caterpillars too!  Tawny is an especially good “frogger”... though we keep her away from the toads whenever possible.  There are still a number of gorgeous wildflowers blooming amidst the fall colours.

We're heading out this afternoon, bound for Quebec.  Onward to further adventures and more fall colours.

We loved our visit on Crow Lake with Dave & Bonnie.  Thank you!!!

Chicago: Good food, good family, good walks!

We got into the Chicago area (Mokena, IL) late Thursday.  Uncle Norm and Aunt Paulette helped us get set up (and not take out the basketball net with our trailer!) and then came into the RV to meet the kitties.  We had a nice visit with all, and Aunt Paulette came on Tawny's adventuresome first walk in the area.
Friday night the whole fam-damily went to Little Joe's to enjoy some good Italian food and great fun with their in-house crooner...

There was much singing, and picture-taking that night!

Uncle Norm, Victoria (all the way from Shanghai!!) and Kim

The Girls!!
We all had a lovely weekend with lots of visiting - at Mike & Lynn's house, at Norm & Paulette's house, and at Brett & Teri's house - "The Erickson's Last Resort"... and what a resort it is....
The Grill and Bar area

One of the many sitting areas

The (outdoor) Living Room with Fireplace

The (upstairs) firepit - another is down below in the woods

The hot tub... ahhhhhhh.... loved the hot tub...

Greenery on the backside of grill area - pool in background

Pond, complete with Jeremiah the Bullfrog!!

Sam & Tawny had many nice walks around the Erickson's Last Resort.  Sam loved the upstairs area (and the woods beyond the lower firepit!), and Tawny wandered around the lower area some, but mostly walked down the block to the community pond area, where she chased frogs and locusts around in the grass.  I'm sure the neighbours will not soon forget the little bitty kitty trotting down their sidewalk with her tail straight in the air twice a day to go see the frogs...
There was lots of R&R for the kitties this weekend.  I think they enjoyed hanging out in the trailer and catching up on their sleep, after all the excitement of a week on the road getting here.

Sunday afternoon (Sept 21) - Terri & Brett hosted a get-together in their backyard.  The food was amazing and their dog, Jax, (the gentlest golden retriever in the world) got to join in the festivities.
Jax!!

Now we're off, headed north again... back to Canada to enjoy the fall colours through Ontario and Quebec.  We were a little early for Chicago's fall, though we did see some gorgeous red bushes.  We very much enjoyed our time in the Chicago area.  Thanks, everyone!!  xoxoxo >^..^<
